Menu items

A menu item is one thing you sell. The screen is Manage Menu Items, and its description is “Build and price the menu guests see in POS and online” — the same record drives the register, your public menu and the storefront.

Plans
Bistro, Brasserie, Signature, Enterprise
Can it be switched off?
No. It is part of every plan that includes it and cannot be switched off.

Catalog → Menu Items. tenant.products.view to look, tenant.products.manage to change.

Field Required What it affects
Name Yes Shown everywhere, including on the kitchen docket.
Description No Shown on the public menu and in item details.
Category Yes Which section the item appears under.
Price Yes The list price. See Prices by channel.
Cost Price No Your own cost. Feeds food-cost reporting, never shown to guests.
Stock Quantity No See Availability and stock.
Min Stock Level No The threshold for low-stock alerts.
Active — Inactive items do not appear on the menu.
Top pick (storefront) — “Shown in the Top picks carousel on your public menu.”
Dietary labels No Veg, Gluten Free, Halal. Rendered as badges.
SKU No Your own code. Searchable.
Barcode No For scanner-driven tills.
Sort Order No “Lower numbers appear first. Leave blank to place at end.”
Tax Rate — Use global rate, or a custom percentage.
Images No “PNG, JPG, WebP. Max 2MB each.”

Their hint: “Shown as badges on the menu to help customers identify dietary options.” Three are available — Veg, Gluten Free (abbreviated GF where space is tight) and Halal.

Leave it on Use global rate and the item inherits your restaurant’s default rate, so a rate change in one place covers the whole menu. Set Custom… only for an item that is genuinely taxed differently. The field’s own hint says the same: “Leave as ‘Use global rate’ to inherit the restaurant’s default tax rate.”

Whether that price already includes tax is a separate restaurant-wide setting — see Tax and pricing.

You can upload, or select Choose from library to reuse an image already uploaded for another item. The library searches “by file or menu item name”, so an image you uploaded for Margherita is findable when you build Margherita (large).

Adding a category without leaving the screen

Section titled “Adding a category without leaving the screen”

The category dropdown has Add Category built in, so you do not have to abandon a half-filled item to create the section it belongs in. It creates a minimal category — name and description — which you can flesh out later on the Menu Categories screen.

Drag rows to reorder. One rule matters:

Adding a menu item requires a specific branch to be selected, not All Locations. With the location picker on “all”, the screen refuses with “Please select a specific location before adding menu items.” Pick the branch first.

Delete moves the item to the deleted list, where Restore brings it back. Permanently Delete does not come back. Prefer switching Active off for anything you might sell again — a deleted item takes its images, variants and add-ons with it.
