BAS and GST (Australia)
Australian restaurants need GST totals for each Business Activity Statement period. The figures are all recorded; where you read them from depends on how you lodge.
- Plans
- Brasserie, Signature, Enterprise
- Can it be switched off?
- No. It is part of every plan that includes it and cannot be switched off.
Getting your GST figures today
Section titled “Getting your GST figures today”Through your accounting software
Section titled “Through your accounting software”The better route if you already use one. Connect Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online, and the GST 10% and GST-free account mappings carry the tax treatment across with each synchronised order — so GST is classified in the software that prepares the statement, rather than being re-derived from a spreadsheet. See Accounting integrations.
Through the exports
Section titled “Through the exports”If you lodge yourself or hand figures to an adviser:
- The transaction report over the BAS period gives you gross takings by payment method.
- The day report CSV export gives you per-day totals, which is the form most advisers prefer for a quarter.
Set your tax configuration first
Section titled “Set your tax configuration first”Both routes are only as right as your tax setup. Before a BAS period starts, check under Setup → Tax and pricing that your GST rate is set, that prices are flagged correctly as tax-inclusive (Australian menu prices normally are), and that any GST-free lines are marked as such. Getting this wrong does not show up as an error — it shows up as a wrong number on a lodged statement.
See Tax and pricing.
Your ABN
Section titled “Your ABN”Keep your ABN on file under Setup → Legal details. It belongs on tax invoices, and it is what the BAS calculation validates against when that report becomes available.
