Taking payment on the device

Collect payment is where money is actually recorded. You reach it from the Register’s Cash or Card buttons, from Collect payment on an order, or from Pay on a table.

Plans
Brasserie, Signature, Enterprise
Can it be switched off?
No. It is part of every plan that includes it and cannot be switched off.
Needs first
POS and in-house orders. This stays off until all of them are in your plan and switched on.

The screen lists the order’s items with tick boxes. What you tick decides what is being paid for, and the hint under the list tells you which of the three cases you are in:

  • Nothing ticked — you are paying the whole remaining balance.
  • Some items ticked — you are paying for those items only.
  • Everything ticked — same as paying the whole bill.

Each payment remembers the items attached to it, which is what makes a split bill auditable later. An order’s Split Payments section shows every payment taken with its own Items: … line, or No items linked where a payment was taken against the balance rather than against specific items.

Plans
Brasserie, Signature, Enterprise
Can it be switched off?
Yes — an owner or manager can turn it off under Setup → Features.
Needs first
Table sessions and multi-check seating. This stays off until all of them are in your plan and switched on.

Enter what the customer handed over as Cash received. The screen shows:

  • Cash on bill — the amount being settled
  • Change — what you owe back
  • Short by — shown instead when what was handed over is not enough

Tip amount is a separate field and is recorded as a tip, not as part of the sale.

Cash needs an open till or waiter bank on this device. If it is missing you get:

Open a till or waiter bank on this device before taking cash payments.

The cash drawer and waiter bank covers opening one.

How Card behaves depends on this device’s card capture setting, not on the account — see This device’s settings:

Setting What happens
Auto (Tap to Pay / ECR) The app drives the NFC reader or the connected terminal and records the payment only after the terminal approves
External terminal You key the amount into your own card machine, then tap Card Approved in the app
Disabled Card is hidden on Register and on the bill for this device

Nothing is recorded until the terminal approves or you confirm. A card payment that never confirms leaves the bill unpaid, which is the correct outcome.

Where part of a bill is paid each way, the screen switches to Mixed payment — or Mixed payment (partial) where the two parts do not cover the whole bill — and the button spells out both halves:

Collect $20.00 Cash · Pay $35.50 Card

Both halves land as two separate payments on the order.

BILL DISCOUNT takes either a Percent or an Amount, a reason, and an optional note. The reasons are fixed: Goodwill, Manager, Loyalty, Other. A preview shows the discounted total before you commit.

Bill discounts are validated against the server, so they need a connection:

Connect to apply a bill discount

Can it be switched off?
Yes — an owner or manager can turn it off under Setup → Features.
Needs first
POS and in-house orders. This stays off until all of them are in your plan and switched on.

A coupon code can be scanned or typed. An unrecognised or out-of-date code is refused outright:

Invalid or expired coupon

Coupons on the device covers the rules a coupon is checked against.

When a dine-in bill reaches fully paid, the app offers to close it out rather than doing it behind your back:

Order #1042 is fully paid. Mark it completed to free table 7?

Complete & free table finishes the order and releases the table. Keep open leaves the table occupied, which is what you want when the party is still sitting there and may order again.

With card capture on Auto and NFC hardware present, the app runs the terminal itself and narrates each step: starting, initialising, preparing the NFC reader, creating the payment request, waiting for the card tap, authorising, then finalising. With a separate Stripe reader it also shows Discovering reader and Connecting reader, and asks you to present the card to the reader rather than to the tablet.

Payment captured is the point at which the money is recorded. The receipt then prints.

Message What it means What to do
Tap to Pay is unavailable The feature is not available on this device Use an external terminal, or a device that supports it
No NFC hardware is available on this device (common on some tablets) There is no NFC chip to read a card with Take card on a phone, a Stripe reader, or an external terminal
NFC is switched off The hardware is there but disabled Turn NFC on in the device’s own Android settings
Set a business address for this location (or Legal Details) so a payment terminal location can be created Stripe needs an address before it will create a terminal location Add the address in the dashboard, under the location or Legal Details
The reader disconnected A paired reader dropped off Re-pair or reconnect it, then retry

A failed Tap to Pay never records a payment. Retry it, or fall back to cash or an external terminal.

Change to cash exists on an order, but it refuses once the payment has been fiscalised:

Fiscal receipt is finished. Refund or Storno the card payment, then take cash as a new payment.

That is correct in Germany and anywhere else a fiscal receipt has been signed — a finished receipt cannot be rewritten, only reversed. See Fiscal and TSE (Germany).
