When payment fails
If a renewal payment fails — an expired card, a block from the bank, insufficient funds — your account status becomes past due.
You keep trading
Section titled “You keep trading”This is the important part. A failed card does not stop service. Your account keeps full access during past due: orders, payments, the till and reports all keep working, and a payment banner appears in the dashboard.
This is deliberate. Cutting a restaurant off mid-service over a card that expired would do far more damage than the unpaid invoice.
How to clear it
Section titled “How to clear it”- Open Setup → Subscriptions → manage billing.
- Update the card, or add a new one.
- Stripe retries the outstanding invoice. Once it succeeds your status returns to active and the banner goes.
You can also pay the open invoice directly from the billing portal rather than waiting for the retry.
If it is not cleared
Section titled “If it is not cleared”Repeated failures eventually end the subscription at Stripe, and the account loses access the way an expired trial does — see Trials and what happens when one ends. Nothing is deleted at that point either.
