The cash drawer and waiter bank
The device’s cash screen is called Cash drawer on a till and Waiter bank on a handset. It is the same screen; the label follows what your role is allowed to open. Drawer shifts, floats and safe drops covers the rules; this page is the screen.
- Plans
- Brasserie, Signature, Enterprise
- Can it be switched off?
- No. It is part of every plan that includes it and cannot be switched off.
- Needs first
- POS and in-house orders. This stays off until all of them are in your plan and switched on.
The two kinds of shift
Section titled “The two kinds of shift”| Cash drawer | Waiter bank | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Cashier on a till | Waiter carrying their own float |
| Tied to | This device’s drawer | The person |
| Needs permission | Open cash drawer | Open waiter bank |
A shift is scoped to this person on this device. The same login open on two devices is the single most common cause of a spurious “open a cash drawer shift” refusal — see Open a cash drawer shift.
Opening one
Section titled “Opening one”Count the cash you are starting with and enter it as the opening float. Where the device remembers the last close, it prefills — but it tells you to check rather than trust it:
Prefills from last close: $200.00 — recount and adjust if the drawer changed.
Recount anyway. A prefilled float that nobody verified is how a variance gets inherited from yesterday’s shift.
If your account cannot do this on the server you get a clear refusal rather than a silent failure:
This account cannot open or close the cash drawer on the server.
The restaurant owner role cannot open a till at all — that is deliberate, not a bug. Give cash handling to a cashier or manager login.
Cash movements during the shift
Section titled “Cash movements during the shift”Money moving in or out between open and close is recorded with a reason, and the reasons are fixed:
Safe drop · Tip out · Bank · Vendor · Paid in · Cash refund · Other
The movement types shown on the shift are Opening float, Cash in, Cash out and Closing count.
Closing one
Section titled “Closing one”Count the drawer and enter it. The close result shows:
- Counted — what you counted
- Expected — what the system thinks should be there
- Variance — the difference
- Cash sales and Card sales for the shift
Print shift report sends it to the till printer.
Blind counts
Section titled “Blind counts”Where your venue runs blind counts, Expected is hidden until you have committed a number:
Expected cash is hidden until close (blind count).
This is on purpose. A counter who can see the expected figure before counting tends to count to it. If you need the expected figure first, that is a setting your manager changes, not something to work around.
You cannot log out with a shift open
Section titled “You cannot log out with a shift open”A register shift is still open on this device. Close the shift (count cash) before logging out.
The same block applies before switching location. Count down and close first. A shift left open on a device nobody is using still shows as that person’s responsibility.
Cash drawer is not the day close
Section titled “Cash drawer is not the day close”These get confused constantly, so the app says it outright:
Cash drawer = this till’s shift (handover OK). Day close = end the restaurant day once in Reports.
A till shift can be closed and reopened several times a day for handovers. The day close happens once — see Reports and the day close on the device.
